I definitely noticed this on my 2014 Ram. If you are in a rush and go through the movements as described by Grayman5752 v ery quickly it would stay in "limbo" and show D on the shifter, but still be in neutral. On mine it would also prompt something on the dash cluster, like Vehicle not in park or something like that.
